Sembalun vs Senaru — which Rinjani route is right for you?

Short answer: if you have 3 days, do both. If you only have 2 days, start from Sembalun. Here's why.

The two main routes at a glance

Rinjani has two primary trailheads — Sembalun on the east and Senaru on the north. They both reach the crater rim but offer very different landscapes and are used differently in practice.

The Sembalun route — for summit seekers

Sembalun is the standard route for anyone wanting to reach the summit. The trail climbs through beautiful open savanna and dry grassland — big skies, views back over Lombok and a sense of space. The terrain is exposed, which means it's hot during the day but you get unobstructed views of the mountain from the moment you start.

The direct ascent line from Sembalun to the summit makes it the go-to route for the pre-dawn summit push. The terrain is firm enough to navigate in the dark by headlamp, and the guiding line from the crater rim to the summit is clear.

Use Sembalun if you're doing the 2D1N summit trek — you ascend and descend via Sembalun, spending the night on the crater rim before the 2 AM summit push.

The Senaru route — the rainforest descent

Senaru sits on Rinjani's forested northern slopes. The trail winds through lush tropical rainforest — a completely different world from the open savanna of Sembalun. You're under the canopy for much of the descent, with waterfalls audible in the distance and the forest alive with birds.

This is why Senaru is best experienced as a descent on the 3D2N crossing — after two dramatic days above the treeline, walking down into the green of Senaru feels like the right ending to the trip.

The best option: do both (3D2N crossing)

The 3D2N Sembalun-to-Senaru crossing is the most complete Rinjani experience — and the most popular package for good reason. You get everything: the open savanna of Sembalun, the summit sunrise, the volcanic hot springs at Segara Anak crater lake, and the rainforest descent to Senaru.

Starting from Sembalun and finishing at Senaru means you're always moving forward rather than retracing your steps. You see two completely different faces of the same mountain.

What about the Torean route?

The Torean route is Rinjani's least-trekked and most scenic trail. It approaches from the west, passing through waterfalls, green valleys and quieter terrain than either Sembalun or Senaru. Very few operators offer it.

We run the Torean route on private trips — it's a genuinely different experience for those who want to avoid the main crowds. Contact us for details.

Common questions

Is Sembalun or Senaru better for Rinjani?
For the summit, Sembalun is better — it's the main ascent route with a direct line to the top. Senaru is best used as a descent. For the full experience (summit + crater lake), do the 3D2N crossing that starts at Sembalun and ends at Senaru.
Can I start the trek from Senaru?
Yes, you can ascend from Senaru to the crater rim, but this route is more commonly used for descent. Most summit attempts start from Sembalun because the ascent is more direct and the terrain better for the pre-dawn summit push.
What is the Torean route?
The Torean route is Rinjani's quietest, most scenic trail — less-trekked, passing waterfalls and green valleys. It's available on our private trips. Contact us for details.
